Higher than 4, 000 metres in the heart of the Andes, the Potosí mine discovered by the conquistadors is the largest deposit of silver in the world. The town that grew at its foot, with a population of 140, 000, once rivalled European metropolises. Potosí has gone to sleep but miners still work the famous Cerro Ricco. They work on a freelance basis under extremely archaic conditions and luck has a name and a face - El Tio, the diabolical divinity of the galleries, the owner of the ore and of the lives of men. The devil sometimes comes in person at night and introduces himself to a miner who has stayed on alone in the galleries and offers to sign a pact with him. Using the accounts of those who might have met him, the film tells the curious story of Manuel MORALÈS, a miner suspected of having entered into a pact with the devil.
