Traditional knowledge and medicine for elephants in Laos Elephants have a very diversified diet that they adapt according to their physiological condition. Mahouts observe that they consume specific plants according to their state of health. In a study conducted in Laos, an IRD research team found that mahouts' observation of these behaviours, which they interpret as a form of self-medication by their elephants, had led to a transfer of use of some of these plants to traditional human and veterinary pharmacopoeias.
