forest of fiber, extractivism in amazonia fibre de la forêt (la) The search for new, sustainable development models is today a necessity in the Amazon basin. Some suggested alternatives are based on traditional production methods such as extractivism, or gathering of forest products, which provides a living for around two million people in the Amazon basin in Brazil. This reconciles the twin needs of utilisation and protection in the forest. Piaçaba, the example shown in this documentary, is a palm tree cropped for its fibres by indigenous peoples in the Upper Rio Negro area.
